Loïe Fuller, a modern dance pioneer and co-founder of Maryhill Museum of Art, continues to inspire artists and audiences worldwide. A recent article in Hyperallergic illuminates Fuller’s transformative use of light, fabric, and movement in the documentary film Obsessed With Light, which debuted in film festivals in 2023-24 and began its theatrical release on December 6, 2024.

Fuller’s revolutionary techniques in stagecraft—integrating color, lighting effects, and choreography—cemented her status as a pioneer of the performing arts. At Maryhill, her legacy is honored in our permanent exhibition featuring Art Nouveau posters, photographs, art glass and memorabilia from her 35-year career as a performer. It was she who convinced Sam Hill to turn his unfinished Maryhill mansion into a museum showcasing fine art. Fuller’s close association with well-known artists in France helped build the core of the museum’s collection, including the acquisition of works by French sculptor Auguste Rodin.
