Seasonal On-Site Volunteer Grounds Maintenance / Caretaker
Contract period: April 1 – November 30, 2021

Location: Maryhill Museum of Art is located in a relatively remote area of southwest Washington, overlooking the eastern end of the Columbia River Gorge on State Route 14, just west of US Highway 97. The closest town is Goldendale, Washington 11 miles to the east. The museum is 45 miles east of Hood River, Oregon, 25 miles from The Dalles, Oregon, and approximately 80 miles southwest of Yakima, WA.

Site Description: Maryhill Museum of Art opened to the public in 1940 and remains one of the Pacific Northwest’s most enchanting cultural destinations. The property includes the museum building and its immediate grounds, as well as ranchlands that are leased for farming and wind energy; the nearby Maryhilll Loops Road and Stonehenge Memorial are also part of the campus. Maryhill is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the property is an official site of the National Historic Lewis and Clark Trail. The location has sweeping views over the Columbia River Gorge and to Mount Hood in the west. The summer can be hot and windy.

Benefits: The volunteer will have use of a full hookup campsite including: water, sewer, and 50 amp electrical hookups and a stunning view of the river. The museum will provide water, electricity, and sewer services from April 1 thru November 30, 2021. Tools and training will be provided to complete the volunteer duties. Additionally, you will enjoy the scenic beauty of the historic Maryhill Museum of Art grounds and have the opportunity to interact with visitors from all over the world.

Volunteer Duties: The position requires 24 hours of volunteer service per week, to include: greeting the public and answering questions as needed; museum grounds maintenance, including mowing, trimming, weeding, etc.; running and maintaining irrigation; emptying garbage and recycling receptacles, removing litter; maintaining and servicing vehicles, tools and equipment, and facilities such as the shop, and pumphouse.

Skills required: Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, lawn mowers, tractors and related equipment. Moderate lifting is involved. Must have good public contact skills and a valid driver’s license.

Volunteers are the heart and soul of Maryhill Museum of Art. We are always ready to welcome you into our active, social group. NO PREVIOUS ART HISTORY knowledge is required—just the desire to learn about art and cultural history, meet new people, and spread the joy of Maryhill and its collections to visitors who come from our community and far distances.

Time and distance are no obstacles to volunteering. We provide flexible schedules and will work with your interests to place you in the perfect volunteer position. Volunteers receive a 30% discount in our store; 20% discount on books in our shop; 10% discount in Loie’s Café; special volunteer-only trips; monthly optional educational experiences; and more.

Office Volunteer: These “on-call” volunteers help with mailing and general office duties.

Visitor Services: These special volunteers greet visitors and provide an overview of the collections, services and their locations. They walk the galleries to answer questions for our guests.

Events Volunteer: Volunteers help with various activities from set-up to facilitating a great experience. Events are planned in advanced and volunteers may sign up for jobs/time as their availability allows.

Collections Assistance: Working closely with the Curator of Art and Collections Manager these volunteers must be willing to be interviewed, trained, and maintain a regular schedule.

Interactive Gallery Guides: These volunteers give interactive tours to school groups, adult groups and specialized groups. They must attend a 6-week Saturday morning training class and optional monthly educational meetings.

Garden & Grounds Volunteer:  Do you enjoy working outdoors or have a passion for gardening?  Would you like to share your passion with others?  We seek volunteers who want to make a difference in the gardens. Training and materials will be provided.
