Since October 2023, Maryhill Museum of Art has hosted a series of wa’paas basketweaving workshops, facilitated by Chestina Dominguez, an enrolled member of Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation. As highlighted in a recent Oregon Live article, these workshops not only teach technique but also foster connection among diverse participants.
Honoring Tradition, Building Community
Wa’paas are utilitarian baskets woven with a unique full-turn twining method long practiced by Indigenous Americans of the mid-Columbia River region. They have traditionally been used for gathering roots as well as nuts, seeds, and mushrooms.
