Event Details

This day is about combining the art of language with the visual arts. Ekphrastic means “art inspired by art,” and in that vein, we invite you to bring a poem or create a poem that connects to an artwork at Maryhill. This can be a poem written by you or written by your favorite poet.

At 1 p.m., or any time prior to the day, arrive at Maryhill Museum of Art and explore the galleries to find an artwork that most closely connects to the poem you have selected. You can also find a work of art you find inspirational and create a new poem specific to that work. At 2 p.m. we will gather in the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust Education Center and visit the various artworks. Each participant will read their poem, followed by a group discussion on connections and meanings. All are invited to show a copy of a favorite poem at the door and receive free admission on April 25.

Poem in Your Pocket Day was established by the Academy of American Poets as an annual event to bring poetry into our everyday lives.
