A brief description of Museum Week:
Maryhill Museum reaches out to schools in both Washington and Oregon to give students a rich museum experience. Many of these children will never have set foot in a museum. This is a magical opportunity for them.
Museum Week is comprised of art activities, art discussion, a performance, and an outdoor experience.
The theme of this years’ museum week is Nocturnes. There will be four activities based around this theme:
1. A nocturnal drawing activity in the Ed. Center with a discussion about nocturnal animals based on the book ‘Nocturnal Amimals’ by Abbie Dunne.
2. A 3D sculpture based on the physical concept of expressing a human at rest.
3. A performance by storyteller extraordinaire Will Hornyak, in the Indigenous People’s gallery.
4. An outdoor activity map designed & made specifically for children. The activity map will include art and science. We will observe and discuss artwork in our outdoor sculpture garden. We will discuss nocturnal animals that live and visit our beautiful grounds, and many aspects of life along the Columbia River, including the Lewis & Clarks expedition & modern-day life on the river.
We will have a group leader assigned to each bus (4 buses per day with approx. 25 students per activity. Our group leaders will assist each school group (& their teachers) throughout the day by guiding them through all four of the activities.
