Visual and teaching artist Chloë Hight will be creating a woven sculpture with natural material as a part of The Exquisite Gorge Project II: Fiber Arts.
Cordage is a gathering of fiber twisted together to create a more resilient form. In this class at the The History Museum of Hood River County, Chloë Hight will lead students in making lengths of cordage using a variety of locally gleaned plant materials like daylily, cattail, iris, and Himalayan blackberry (plant selection is seasonally dependent). We will explore the significance that cordage carries as a traditional hand technology that is an innate part of the human story and our connection to place.
Cost: FREE; workshop is limited to 15 participants, so register early!

Put some STEAM into your Art Education! Documenting the natural world has been at the very core of artmaking since the caves of Lascaux and has been vital in data collection and creativity throughout time. Let’s explore how science and art work together to enhance understanding in the classroom. We’ll delve deep into how students make connections between concepts, hone our observation and problem-solving skills, learn about artists, their media and practice, and use the world around us to illustrate, imagine, explore, create, and interpret the beauty of our planet. You’ll leave this workshop with the skills and confidence to incorporate art making – from drawing and illustration to printmaking, sculpture and photography – into lessons on biology, zoology, botany, anatomy, physics and more.
Maryhill Museum of Art‘s Curator of Education, Louise Palermo will co-present the Institute with oversight by Colleen Schafroth, Executive Director as lead instructor. There will be a number of guest artists presenting throughout the week. Guest artists include Molly Gaston Johnston; Bio Illustrator; Christopher Pothier; Marjorie Williams-Smith and Duncan Berry.
Cost: $230 museum members / $245 non-members. Advance registration required.
REGISTER NOWThree hours of credit are available through Antioch University Seattle for an additional fee. Continuing Education Clock-hours are available.
A “first-requested” scholarship is available through the Janet P. Swartz and Harriet G. Langfeldt Summer Art Institute Scholarship Fund. To apply, please contact education@maryhillmuseum.org.

Event Details
Sam Hill was passionate not only about art, but his efforts were instrumental in the construction of the Columbia River Highway, the Pacific Highway (Highway 99, the main north-south route through Oregon and Washington), Highway 101 along the coast, and a road to Crater Lake. This two-day festival honors Hill’s passion for creativity in the form of autos and modern roads.
SCHEDULE OF EVENTS:
Saturday, October 1 | 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Concours de Maryhill
This is an open car show and anyone with a special car may enter. Enjoy raffles, food vendors and more! The day concludes with an awards presentation and dinner. Organized by Goldendale Motorsports Association. Free on museum grounds for spectators. Want to enter your car? More information and to register your car here. Receive 2 free museum passes per vehicle entry.
October 1 | Noon to 2 p.m.
Drive the Maryhill Loops Road
Take a spin on the first paved road in the Northwest; with eight hair-pin turns, it’s sure to be a thrill! The Maryhill Loops Road is open to cars only twice a year.
Sunday, October 2 | 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Maryhill Loops Hill Climb
The most historic event on the Pacific Northwest motor racing calendar is this recreation of the Maryhill Hillclimb, with vintage sports cars from the 1930s to 1960s racing singly in a three-mile timed climb up the historic Maryhill Loops Road.. First held in 1955, it has seen top international drivers and cars as diverse as Ferraris, vintage Bentleys, Model-T racers, and formula B cars. The Hillclimb now sees a diverse group of cars, motorcycles, and karts even. It’s a unique experience for any motorsports enthusiast, as very few hillclimb events are still available anywhere in the world. Driving this large portion of the original 1955 course at speed is a dizzying ascension not for the faint of heart, with long drop-offs just a few feet away all the way to the top. Free for spectators viewing the race from the Highway 97 Overlook and from designated viewpoints along the route. Organized by the Maryhill Loops Vintage Hill Climb Association; only their approved cars and drivers will be competing. This program is assisted by members of the Tri-Cities Strictly British Motor Club; Yakima Valley Sports Car Club and Society of Vintage Racing Enthusiasts. For Entry Form or Information contact Starke Shelby at 206-230-0203. or starke@nwinsctr-mi.com
