As the Crow Flies – Take flight down the Gorge and enjoy some great Halloween spirit!

The Ghosts of Maryhill Museum
Get creative! Join us in the M.J. Murdoch Charitable Trust Education Center for an engaging, hands-on art experience for all ages. We’ll be using mannequins and white tissue paper with mixed media to craft life-size ghosts of some of the characters involved in the founding of Maryhill Museum and its collection. Queen Marie of Romania, or modern dance pioneer Loie Fuller or perhaps a sculpture from our Rodin collection! Add a small detail or get more involved. Whatever your contribution, it will add to the spirit of the piece!!

Free with admission

As the Crow Flies is a collaborative interaction between six cultural institutions that run from Cascade Locks to Goldendale bringing the Halloween Spirit to the Columbia River Gorge.

Maryhill Museum is partnering with several organizations in the Gorge community to offer a series of Halloween activities throughout the month of October. View the map indicating the different locations, dates, and times where events will be taking place up and down the Columbia River. Locations include
Maryhill Museum of Art,
Goldendale Community Library,
The Dalles Art Center,
The Columbia Gorge Discovery Center & Museum,
Columbia Gorge Museum, and
Cascade Locks Historical Museum.

Background:The Goldendale Library in 2022, developed a scarecrow-making program inspired by the Japanese village of Nagaro. Once a year, the people of the village made scarecrows that outnumber the actual living villagers by 10 to 1. Nagaro became an international sensation, bringing international attention.

As the Crow Flies is a riff on this idea. Imagine a crow flying down the Columbia River Gorge looking down on all the institutions lining the river. Each institution has developed their own version of Halloween celebrations with scarecrows, real crows, ghosts, and stories. These will be connected via one map with locations and details clearly marked. The events were carefully scheduled so that the visitors from ALL the communities could enjoy all of the many experiences.
