SUMMARY:Juror Workshop with Ray Roberts
DESCRIPTION:Join Pacific Northwest Plein Air in the Columbia River Gorge 2026 ( https://www.maryhillmuseum.org/exhibitions/pacific-northwest-plein-air-in-the-columbia-river-gorge-2026 ) Juror Ray Roberts for a one-day plein air painting workshop at Maryhill Museum of Art. Roberts will teach painters of all abilities about capturing light, atmosphere, and the emotional truth of a scene. Registrants should bring their own materials; see the Materials List for details.\nJuror Workshop Theme: Capturing a Landscape Quickly and Effectively\nVisualizing a painting is key to knowing the direction a painting may go before committing the time and effort in creating it. Through demonstrations, Ray will show his methods for visualizing a scene as a painting, drawing quick value sketches in markers, and painting in a method that builds success from start to finish. He will also share all the tools he uses to ‘check’ progress on a painting through objective concepts. He bases his process on an Atelier approach of painting form (light and shadow), drawing, and composition.\nThis condensed workshop will offer all of his methods used to capture where subject meets design.\nHighlights: Live demonstrations, one-on-one instruction, all levels welcome and all media welcome.\nWhere: Maryhill Museum of Art in the Columbia River Gorge\nWhen: Friday, May 1, 9 am–4 pm with a break for lunch\nReserve your spot >>\nJoin us at the Pacific Northwest Plein Air in the Columbia River Gorge 2026 Opening Reception ( https://www.maryhillmuseum.org/events/pnw-plein-air-2026 ) on Saturday, May 2 from 5–7 pm!\nAbout Ray Roberts\nAward-winning artist Ray Roberts grew up in the days when Orange County, California was still filled with citrus groves and open fields, a landscape that inspired his lifelong affection for the untamed beauty of the countryside and coast.\nRay began his career as an illustrator, establishing studios in Los Angeles and Scottsdale before turning full-time to fine art in 1992. Today, he is widely regarded as a leading voice in American plein air painting, with a career distinguished by numerous top awards, including multiple Best in Show honors at the Laguna Beach Plein Air Painting Invitational, and capped by LPAPA’s 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award.\nHighly respected as both an artist and instructor, Ray brings deep knowledge, clarity, and enthusiasm to his teaching, whether in person, through his workshops, or in his popular instructional videos and online courses.\n
