Maryhill Volunteer Schedule of Meetings – 2010

Meetings for volunteers are held the third Wednesday of every month, 10:30 – 12:00 noon unless otherwise announced. Museum members, friends and persons interested in volunteer opportunities at Maryhill are always welcome.

January 20
Join us for a potluck lunch at The Dalles Art Center. We will have our lunch amid the art on the main floor and enjoy a talk about the Center by Carmen Toll. Art Center volunteers will join us for lunch.

February 17
Marsha Holliston, an assemblage artist in Hood River, will talk about her work. We will see Holliston again on March 20th at the Season Opening, when she will be working with museum guests to create the Great 70-Object Art Assemblage, which will be displayed in the EyeSEE Activity Room throughout the run of 70: Seven Decades of Collection at Maryhill Museum.

March 17
Wear green and bring green food to our St. Patrick’s Day potluck. Get a preview of our opening exhibit, 70: Seven Decades of collecting at Maryhill Museum of Art on a gallery walk with Steve Grafe, Curator of Art.

April 21
Maryhill Museum of Art welcomes two new staff members this season. At this meeting we will learn more about Steve Grafe, our new Curator of Art. He comes to us from Oklahoma City’s National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. We also welcome Melissa Stabile, from the Frisco Historic Park and Museum in Frisco, Colorado. She has accepted the position of Collections Manager at Maryhill Museum of Art. We are very excited to have Steve and Melissa join us, and know you will enjoy getting to know them.

April 24
4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Chapeaus at the Chateau High Tea and Hat Auction at Maryhill Museum. This fundraiser to benefit Maryhill Museum is a volunteer-driven, fun-filled event. Tickets are $20/person. Call the museum at 509-773-3733 or email maryhill@maryhillmuseum.org for tickets.

May 19
Let’s take a field trip to the Carousel Museum in Bickleton! The local community has worked hard to restore their wonderful 1905 Herschell-Spillman carousel. It is said to be one of only three of its type still in operation and was purchased from Portland’s Oaks Park (Portland) in 1929 and brought to Bickleton. We will have a no-host lunch at the famous Blue Bird Café in Bickleton.

June 16
We will be exploring all things glass as we get a curatorial tour of the exhibit, William Morris – Native Species. And we visit the Tacoma Museum of Glass Traveling Hot Shop!

July 14
Time for another field trip to Portland. This time we will be visiting the Hat Museum in Southeast Portland, located in the historic Ladd-Reingold House. The museum director, Alyce Cornyn-Selby donated a Schaiparelli hat to our Tea and Hat Auction, and the museum boasts over 1,000 hats! We will also visit the Portland Art Museum’s special exhibit, The Bible Illuminated: R. Crumb’s Book of Genesis. Volunteers living in the Portland area may wish to join us on this excursion.

August 18
We can’t get enough glass this year! Join us for a day-long field trip to the Museum of Glass (Hot Glass, Cool Art) in Tacoma, WA. The TMG is the only American museum that features contemporary glass art. We will watch glass artists at work in the hot shop amphitheater, walk the Chihuly Bridge of Glass and have lunch in their Cafe.

September 15
Get a new appreciation for illustrated sequential novels in our new exhibit, Comics at the Crossroads: Art of the Graphic Novel, with the show’s curator, Steve Grafe. As the comic art medium has passed a philosophical crossroads and begun moving in diverse directions, so has the Pacific Northwest become a physical crossroads for comic production. You may even learn to draw your own comic character!

October 21
No meeting this month. It is All Hands On Deck as we welcome nearly 1,000 local school children to Museum Week(s). Maryhill volunteers really shine as presenters, walkers, and preparers during these two weeks of intense volunteer-driven art activities for third and fourth grades.

November 17
This date is the 93rd anniversary of Auguste Rodin’s death? We won’t dwell on that; we will celebrate Maryhill Museum’s 70th Birthday with a potluck and a talk about our plans for 2011.

December 8
Celebrate our hard work with some great fun at the Christmas Party for Volunteers. Wacky hijink, champagne cocktails, a holiday potluck and a silent auction are the featured attractions. Time: 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
