OUR GIFT SHOP FEATURES A VAST array of original American Indian jewelry, books, post cards, mementos of Maryhill, educational art games/toys for children, and unique art gifts like the poster (right) of Solitude, a painting of great note by Frederic Leighton from Maryhill Museum's permanent collection.
Frederic Leighton (1830 – 1896) was one of the most eminent Victorian artists of Britain. In 1878 he ascended to the position of president of London's Royal Academy of Arts where Solitude was exhibited in 1890.
In Victorian paintings the image of a meditative woman was associated with romantic expectation. The setting for Solitude was inspired by sketches Leighton made of a waterfall at the Lynn of Dee near Braemar, Scotland.
Solitude is an excellent example of Leighton's finesse at orchestrating color and mood, for the figure seems to almost glow from within while absorbed in deep contemplation, a quality that the 2 ft. x 4 ft. four-color poster captures vividly.
