This Month at Maryhill

BEGINNING IN 1996 MARYHILL MUSEUM has hosted an annual Outdoor Sculptural Invitational. In the setting of the museum's sculpture garden, the Invitational is an opportunity to showcase the work of some of the most noted contemporary sculptors of the Pacific Northwest. This year's exhibition begins on May 10 and runs through October 31 and features works by Gregory Glynn, Stuart Jacobson, Alisa Looney, David Miller, Dennis Peacock, Mylan Rakich and Tom Urban.

The Outdoor Sculpture Invitational compliments the museum's permanent sculptural collection, including works by Julian Voss-Andreae, Tom Herrera, Mel Katz, Heath Krieger, Jill Torberson, Jeff Weitzel, Leon White and Brad Cloepfil.

Plan to spend a summer day wandering the museum grounds to discover these pieces in a beautiful setting. Then come inside the museum to view the the permanent exhibition of the works of Auguste Rodin. This extensive collection is both inspiration for the Outdoor Sculptural Invitational and the genesis for the tradition of featuring "art in the round" at Maryhill Museum.

Mark you calendars for Saturday, May 17 for Maryhill Museum's annual Member's Day. This year plan to drive the Historic Maryhill Loops Road, then participate in Family Fun Day: All About Landscapes which will explore landscapes of the Gorge by Percy Manser and provide an opportunity to create your own oil pastel landscape. Next, enjoy a program that will explore the relationship between Percy Manser and the museum's early director, Clifford Dolph (1938 – 1970). Finally, participate in a garden walk with curator Lee Musgrave and artists as they tour the works of this year's Outdoor Sculptural Invitational.

Library Patrons Check Out Free Museum Pass

In a partnership with regional libraries, Maryhill Museum of Art has provided each library several passes for free family admission to the museum. The passes may be checked out, just like the libraries books or digital media. Maryhill Museum of Art created the pass program to help the public see libraries as a visual arts resource, too. The passes are available at libraries in Hood River, The Dalles, Parkdale, Cascade Locks and through the Fort Vancouver Regional Library branches in Goldendale, White Salmon and Stevenson. Residents of smaller eastern Oregon communities — Hermiston, Moro, Arlington and Boardman — affiliated with the Libraries of Eastern Oregon (LEO) network also will have access to passes this year. Museum Executive Director Colleen Schafroth says the popularity of the program led Maryhill Museum of Art to offer it for this, its fifth year.

"Without question, one of the most unusual and enchanting museums in America… a beloved cultural treasure and favorite tourist destination. Nothing is typical, and much is extraordinary."

—Prepare to be enchanted.
